Torn Tendon, Brandon Wins Anyway

Mesquite, NV:  Lee Brandon—is the REMAX World Long Drive Champion in the Women’s Division for 2001.  On Saturday, October 20, 2001 Brandon, despite injury, hit the winning golf ball at 291 yards to win the competition.  Her third shot was well over 300 yards but went out of bounds and would have made her the first woman to ever hit the ball over 300 yards in the final.  Her closest competition came from Candace Merrill of Galveston, TX who’s furthest shot was 284 yards.  Brandon’s performance was even more impressive, given the fact that she had torn a tendon in her left hand a week earlier and was under doctor’s orders not to compete.

“I really believe that her performance is a testament to her athleticism and her attitude,” said Mike Ambriz, General Manager Long Drivers of America—the creator of the event. “Lee is incredibly physically fit,” continued Ambriz.  “Each year we are seeing that this makes the difference in competition at this level.”  “What makes Lee even more special is how well-liked she is by everyone.”

Despite early concern that her injury would prevent her from entering the competition, let alone winning it, Brandon said she employed the same training regimen and care for the mechanics of movement that got her this far.  22 years ago Brandon nearly lost her arm in a freak accident; severing a major artery and slicing her bicep clean through.  It took her seven years to regain the feeling in her arm and get it working again.

“This isn’t the first time I’ve had to come back from behind where an injury is concerned,” said Brandon.  I tell you, I just had faith in myself and my training and hit the heck out of that ball.”  “It was definitely a nail biter but it’s amazing—I won.”

“Lee is a great spokesperson for the LDA and for the sport of golf,” said Ambriz.  “I believe she is going to have a long, successful career in this sport.”
